Fall Family Photos - Clothing Guide

Tis’ the season for fall family photos, everyone. Every year we are fortunate enough to find fall at our doorsteps greeting us with a cool chill on our faces and the beautiful colors of the leaves as they prepare for winter. This is easily one of the best times to consider getting yourself a family photo because the colors are bold and rich making a naturally beautiful background for your pictures.

One of the biggest questions people have with wintertime wardrobe is, “What do we wear?!” Selecting an outfit for your family photos can be extremely challenging because choosing a palette for the entire family can really take some time. No worries, friends. We have some guidelines we think will really help you.

GENERAL TIPS

If you want to keep things simple, then think simple. Our best suggestion, start with Mom. Ladies clothing trends tend to have more colors and prints to work around so let her pick out her pieces first. If you want to keep things easy, then have her pick out neutral colors to work with - you can’t go wrong.

Complement, Don't Match.

You should focus on using colors together as opposed matching them exactly. You’ll likely create too stagnant of an image if everyone is dressed exactly alike anyways! Looking to make things fun? Go vivid with your colors :)

Keep Things Simple.

No need to make things more difficult by planning several outfits for you and your family. These kinds of days can already feel hectic enough so plan things simply! Changing outfits may also put a damper in the mood and affect your shots in a bad way.

Don’t Plan Colors Around the Holidays.

Getting a photoshoot around this time of the year is certainly fun when you think about placing it on your next Christmas card, but let’s be honest here … It will always look like a Christmas photo if you are decked out head to toe in red and green. If this picture turns out to be a family favorite you’ll never be able to print it and hang it on the wall.

You should also consider your home decor and how the image will look when printed proudly displayed in your home. If your house is decorated in soft neutral colors, you probably don't want your clothing to be aggressively dark.

Socks, Shoes and Squats.

These simple items can easily be forgotten, but can easily be some of the most important elements of a good outfit. Try sitting down, squatting etc. You want to see how those socks peek out, how your pants lay over top of the shoes and most importantly, how they look. Worried about getting them dirty if you travel? Bring a pair of slip on shoes you can slip on easily!

Plan for the Weather.

There is nothing worse than being chilly and not being able to do anything about it. Can’t change your scheduled shooting date? No worries! Bring blankets to snuggle in prior to the shot and keep yourself snuggled in hats and gloves. Sometimes these accessories can look really cute in your photos!

Last, but not Least.

Try on your clothing ahead of time. Look at yourself from every angle and make sure you are pleased with how these garments sit on your body. Don’t forget … bend over, sit down etc. Make sure most of all that you are confident and comfortable!

Thanks for taking a minute to enjoy this week's newsletter. Find yourself a good family photographer who will work with your needs and allow you and your family to have fun. It will be completely evident in your photos when you see the happy faces on your and your children.
